Strengthening Your Core After Baby: My Postnatal Yoga Guide

Christie @ Divine Child Yoga | MAY 1, 2025

One of the biggest questions I hear from new moms is: “How do I get my core strength back safely?” It’s such a valid question, and the answer is more than just crunches or planks. Your core is so much more than your abs — it’s a system of muscles including your pelvic floor, diaphragm, deep abdominals, and back muscles, all working together to support your body.

After having a baby, your core goes through a huge transformation, and thoughtful, mindful movement is the best way to restore strength and stability. That’s where postnatal yoga shines.

Why Core Strength Matters Postpartum

  • Supports your back and reduces pain
  • Helps improve posture (hello, nursing and carrying posture!)
  • Keeps you strong for lifting, holding, and playing with your baby
  • Aids in healing diastasis recti
  • Supports pelvic floor health

My Postnatal Yoga Core Principles

  1. Reconnect Before You Strengthen
We start by rebuilding the mind-body connection through breathwork and gentle movements, rather than diving into high-intensity work.
  2. Work from the Inside Out
I teach how to engage the deep transverse abdominis and pelvic floor, instead of only the surface abs.
  3. Progress at Your Own Pace
Every postpartum body is unique, and recovery takes time. We move at a pace that honors your journey.
  4. Stay Functional
We focus on movements that help you in real life: carrying baby, getting up off the floor, pushing a stroller, etc.
  5. Bring in Mindfulness
Your healing journey deserves compassion, patience, and presence. We use yoga to nurture your heart and mind, not just your muscles.

What to Expect in Class

In my postnatal yoga classes, we use slow, purposeful movements paired with breath to help you reconnect, re-strengthen, and rebuild trust in your body. Whether you’re newly postpartum or years out, you are welcome to join and discover a gentler, more effective way to regain your core.

If you’re ready to feel strong and supported from the inside out, I’d love to see you on the mat!

XO, Christie🩵
