A birth ball is an essential tool for pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery. Whether you're using it for comfort, strengthening exercises, or positioning during birth, selecting the right one is key to getting the most benefits. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the perfect birth ball for you!

What to Look for in a Birth Ball

When purchasing a birth ball, be sure to check for these features:

Latex-free – Ideal for those with latex allergies.

Burst-resistant – Ensures safety in case of a puncture.

Weight capacity of at least 300 lbs – Provides stability and durability.

Finding the Right Size

Your birth ball should fit your height to ensure proper alignment and comfort. Use this size guide to determine the best option:

Your Height = Ball Size

  • 5’0” & under = Small: 55 cm/22”
  • 5’1” to 5’11” = Medium: 65 cm/26”
  • 6’0” to 6’3” = Large: 75 cm/30”

How to Check for Proper Fit

When seated on your birth ball:

  • Your hips should be in line with or higher than your knees.
  • Your feet should be flat on the ground with feet wide
  • If your hips are lower than your knees, your ball may need more air. If it's fully inflated and your hips are still too low, go up a size!
  • It’s better to have a ball that’s slightly too big rather than too small. Keep the packaging and receipt in case you need to exchange it for a different size!

How to Inflate Your Birth Ball

To ensure proper inflation and longevity of your ball, follow these steps:

  1. Day 1: Inflate the ball to about 80% of its full capacity.
  2. Day 2-3: Gradually add more air to reach full inflation.
  3. Check firmness: The ball should be firm but still have a little give when you sit on it.

Where to Buy

I recommend this ball in store from Walmart, and this Birth Ball on Amazon is also a great option! (For reference, I am 5'4" and use a 65cm ball!)

A well-chosen birth ball can be a game-changer for your pregnancy and postpartum experience. Make sure to find one that suits your body and needs, and enjoy all the benefits it has to offer! Be sure to keep your receipt & packaging in case you need to exchange for a different size.
